Part Time Weight & Research Freight Inspector (Will Train)

Reports To:  Platform Supervisor                                                

Department:  Operations - Night

Classification:Hourly Hours are M-F. 5:00PM - 9:00PM

JOB SUMMARY The Weight & Research Freight Inspector is responsible for ensuring that shipments match the proper weight, class, and dimensions which is stated on the BOL. This process is intended to bring proper revenue for services rendered by Valley Cartage. Weight & Research (W&R) physical inspections are necessary in determining if a shipment is properly classified and meets all pricing provisions. Freight must be physically inspected to verify BOL is accurate. Proper classification of shipment is required and can only be determined when a complete freight inspection is performed.

Performance Metrics

  • Earmark shipments utilizing Trip Tracer
  • Survey dock and trailers to capture potential inspections
  • Review trip tracer earmark shipments needing inspection
  • Review score card for daily traction
  • Review Manifests as they arrive in from the drivers


  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Preferred background in warehouse work
  • Forklift experience helpful, but not required


  • Pre-employment drug and physical test
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to read and comprehend complex documents

  • Speak clearly and communicate with others and convey information effectively

DOCK PROCESS: Inspect all shipments on dock

  • Read Strip DR/ or BOL to identify declared contents and piece count
  • Look for oversized skids, over lengths and large shipment orders
  • Look for weights ending in zero or no weight for reweigh revenue
  • Measure entire shipment to determine if density matches BOL
  • Physically Touch shipments looking for low weight shipments /high density

DOCUMENT INSPECTION: Record onto W&R inspection sheet

  • Take photos of shipment to include packaging slip and freight contents
  • Write complete description of shipment onto W&R Research form
  • Return to office to complete the data entry process in TMW system


  • Determine if inspection yields revenue-TMW
  • Find proper NMFC for class and discount shipments
  • Figure density on Class and discount shipments
  • Determine Pallet Spots for PRA Shipments

The employee is occasionally required to stand, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, or crawl. The employee must occasionally have the ability to lift 100-pound cartons to a height of 4-5 feet and load or unload off the truck. The employee must frequently pull on a pallet jack with materials on it weighing up to 3,000 pounds.  The employee is regularly required to drive a forklift. The employee may work from 10 hours to 14 hours a day as needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing duties of this job the employee will regularly be exposed to outside weather conditions.  This also means the employee is regularly required to drive in all sorts of weather.  The employee is required to drive tractors with and without air conditioning.  The employee is required to travel in busy and congested roads and highways. The employee is also subjected to noise and to being around tractors, trailers, and forklifts as well as various other material moving machines.
